I hope many of you have had the opportunity to travel our great country exploring the many historic sites to be found. I’ve also been fortunate to visit, among other hist ori call y sig nifi cant sit es, Cape Can av era l, Flor ida, fro m whic h Neil Armstr ong left for the moon the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City and MGM Studios near Los Angeles, where I looked up at the ghostly “Bates Hotel.” All across the country, the welcome mat is out for any of us who want to learn more of America’s story.
A cou ple of ye ars later I spe nt half a day at Little Big Horn Battlefield National Park in Montana four hours never passed so rapidl y, and watc hing the sun set ov er the eerily quie t plains was a profoundly moving experience. A few years ago, I planned a vacation centered on Washington, D.C., where I not only got to visit the seat of our nation al go ve rnm ent, but also many important nearby Civil War sites, including Manassas, Harpers Ferry, Antietam and, of course, Gett ysb urg. Mo st of us who are pa ss io na te re ad ers of America n history want to visit where the action took place, too.
